In local news, the sports director is typically the station's primary sportscaster, and often anchors the primetime newscasts on weekdays. They are in charge of sports programming and production that airs. A sports director usually has the liberty to hire and fire the other members of his department, including their field reporters, weekend anchors, and photographers.
