Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is an upcoming American police procedural series created by Erica Messer that will air on CBS and is produced by The Mark Gordon Company, in association with CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios. The series is a spin-off from the successful Criminal Minds series, and will follow an elite team of FBI agents solving cases regarding American citizens on international soil.[1] CBS aired a backdoor pilot on the April 8, 2015 episode of Criminal Minds, and introduced the characters with a crossover episode eponymously titled "Beyond Borders".[1][2] The series will premiere in 2016.[3]

Production

A proposed new series in the Criminal Minds franchise was announced in January 2015, and was to be named Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Gary Sinise and Anna Gunn had been cast in the lead roles of Jack Garrett and Lily Lambert, with Tyler James Williams and Daniel Henney being cast as Russ "Monty" Montgomery and Matthew "Matt" Simmons, respectively.

On May 11, 2015, CBS announced that Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, has been picked up for the 2015–16 season, however, it was soon announced that Gunn had departed the series,[4] with Alana de la Garza and Annie Funke further being cast as series regulars.[5]

When an innocent family of four is abducted while vacationing in Barbados, Hotch and Cruz enlist the assistance of the FBI's most elite team in handling international cases. They realize that this situation closely resembles a case that the BAU once handled in Florida. Upon this discovery, the BAU contacts Jack Garrett, the unit chief of the team with whom they will be working. The BAU will need to pool together their skills with Garrett's elite team in hopes to save this family. This episode will serve as the backdoor-pilot episode for the new spin-off, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
