Excerpt
Excerpt: Six provinces of Thailand; Ranong, Phang-nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun, face the Andaman Sea (Fig. 1). Th eir total coastline extends from the Malaysian border 740 km northwards to Mayanmar. The Andaman Sea is a non-enclosed sea with deep oceanic waters. It possesses a rich marine ecosystem which is characterized by vast coastal areas of mangrove forest, seagrass beds and coral reefs. These areas are suitable for nursery grounds of various associated fauna. The sea is influenced by semi-diurnal tides of approximately 3 m during spring tide and 1 m during neap tide. Two monsoon seasons prevail in this area. The south-west monsoon lasts from May to October and the north-east monsoon from November to April.
